STYES / CHALAZIONS

Styes and chalazions are small fluid-filled cysts that develop along the eyelid because of an infection or a blocked oil gland. While these bumps do not usually lead to any serious complications, they may cause pain, swelling and tearing of the eye. Larger chalazions may gradually obstruct vision.

A stye appears on the eyelid as a small red bump. It may enlarge and hurt. A chalazion is similar but typically larger and less painful. Styes and chalazions may usually heal within a week or two, while chalazions may take up to a few months.

Many styes and chalazions are initially treated on their own with hot, warm, wet compresses. Your doctor may prescribe antibiotic eye drops as well. or recommend OTC treatments for those that If the lump persists or enlarges, the doctor may numb the eyelid and drain the infection. Patients should avoid wearing makeup or contact lenses until after the stye or chalazion has healed.
